MS affects millions of people in the United States. Despite its prevalence, research has often overlooked the unique challenges faced by Hispanics/Latinos living with MS, including an earlier onset of diagnosis, faster disease progression, and more aggressive symptoms that can lead to severe, long-term disabilities.

The FERLA MS study seeks to bridge this gap by designing culturally-adapted exercise programs for improving health and quality of life for Hispanics/Latinos with MS. FERLA MS focuses on personalized exercise regimens and addressing disparities in research participation, and strives to provide this community with support for MS management.

The FERLA MS study introduces two 16-week exercise programs to residents living in Chicago:

  1. Aerobic and Resistance Exercise: This program focuses on enhancing physical strength, stamina, and overall fitness. Participants will engage in aerobic exercises, tailored to their fitness levels and medical considerations. Additionally, the program incorporates resistance exercises, promoting muscle strength and endurance. Personalization is the core of this program, ensuring that every participant’s journey is optimized for their specific needs and goals.
  2. Flexibility and Range of Motion Program: Flexibility is a key component of well-being with MS, and this program is designed to improve participants’ range of motion, flexibility, and overall physical comfort. Individuals will benefit from a series of exercises aimed at increasing joint flexibility, reducing muscle tension, and promoting relaxation. Just like the first program, this one is also highly personalized to ensure that participants receive the right support for their unique circumstances.

Participants in this study will be randomly assigned to one of these two exercise groups, allowing us to assess the effectiveness of each program. To ensure ease of participation, we will mail essential materials, including yoga mats, resistance bands, and comprehensive training manuals, directly to participants’ homes.

We recognize the value of your time and commitment and will offer a $100 compensation for completing the FERLA MS study in the form of an emailed electronic gift card.
